DoubleTree by Hilton Amsterdam Centraal Station
557 rooms on Oosterdok island, east of Centraal, below the 11th-floor LuminAir sky bar
About this hotel
Oosterdoksstraat 4 is on Oosterdokseiland, the strip of land just east of Amsterdam Centraal that the hotel shares with the OBA central library. From the trains, use the east access (Oostertoegang) and stay on the Oosterdok side: the lobby is about six minutes on foot, with no tram square to cross. Centraal is the hub for NS Intercity trains, the ICE to Germany and the Eurostar to Brussels, Paris and London, whose border checks take place in a dedicated terminal inside the station. Schiphol is about 20 minutes by direct train.
All 557 rooms have floor-to-ceiling windows; the upper floors look over the IJ or the city, and some courtyard-view rooms are sold as soundproofed. On the 11th floor, the bar long known as SkyLounge now trades as LuminAir, with a terrace over the IJ. The buffet breakfast runs from 6:30 to 10:30 on weekdays and from 7:00 to 11:00 at weekends, the front desk is staffed 24 hours and keeps luggage, and the gym never closes. The public Oosterdok garage is directly beneath the building.

Our take
With 557 rooms on Oosterdokseiland, the DoubleTree is the large, predictable option for a trip that starts or ends at Amsterdam Centraal: rated 8.6 from 8,547 reviews, a few minutes from the east end of the station on flat pavement. I would book it for an early ICE or Eurostar, a conference, or an overnight stop between two trains with heavy luggage, since Schiphol is a 20-minute direct train away. I would not book it for canal-house character: this is a modern block on the water, run like a conference hotel. Know that the 11th floor belongs to LuminAir, a sky bar open until 3:00 on Friday and Saturday nights.
- Leave Centraal by the east access (Oostertoegang) and walk along the Oosterdok side: about six minutes later you reach the lobby without crossing the tram and bus square in front of the main entrance.
- Ask for a high floor facing the IJ: every room has floor-to-ceiling windows, and the upper floors look over the water and the ferries crossing to Noord.
- For a Eurostar to London, border checks happen in the station terminal before boarding, so leave the hotel well before the short walk suggests.
- Arriving by car, park once in the public Oosterdok garage under the hotel and carry on by train; the garage is charged separately from the room.
Why we love it
- Reached from the east end of Centraal without crossing the tram square in front of the station
- LuminAir, the 11th-floor sky bar and terrace over the IJ
- Gym open 24 hours and the public Oosterdok garage underneath
Why guests love itThe DoubleTree suits families mostly because of the walk: from the east side of Amsterdam Centraal to the lobby is a few minutes on flat pavement, with no stepped canal bridges, which matters with a pushchair and two suitcases. A high room facing the IJ gives children a running view of the free ferries crossing to Noord, and a ride on one of them makes a short outing straight from the hotel. Breakfast is a buffet with eggs cooked to order, and dogs and cats are accepted within a weight limit per animal. The trade-offs are scale and evenings: 557 rooms make it a conference hotel at heart, and the 11th floor is LuminAir, a cocktail bar rather than a family restaurant, so dinner with young children usually happens elsewhere. I would not pick it for anyone after a small canal-side Amsterdam hotel.
