About this hotel

The building at Gerhard-Bronner-Straße 11 belongs to the new Favoriten neighbourhood that grew up around Wien Hauptbahnhof, Vienna's through station for Railjets, international trains and ÖBB Nightjets. Motel One opened the hotel in May 2015, with around 533 rooms in the chain's design style, each air-conditioned, and a lounge bar on the ground floor. Breakfast is a paid buffet from 06:00 on weekdays and from 07:00 at weekends. Tram D, about 100 metres away, runs to Belvedere and the Ringstraße, and the U1 at Hauptbahnhof reaches Stephansplatz. The hotel garage takes cars for a fee, and pets are accepted on request, which suits travellers combining a car and a long train journey.

Our take

Gerhard-Bronner-Straße 11 sits right beside Wien Hauptbahnhof, the station that replaced the old Südbahnhof and now handles Vienna's Railjets and ÖBB Nightjets, and tram D stops about 100 metres away for the run to Belvedere and the Ring. The hotel opened in May 2015 and has around 533 rooms, small to medium in size, all air-conditioned. Breakfast is a paid buffet that opens at 06:00 on weekdays but only at 07:00 at weekends, the detail that catches early Saturday departures. Upper floors look out over the new Favoriten district, some from the 14th floor. I would pick it for the night before or after a Nightjet; anyone hoping for old-Vienna character will find a modern chain building.

  • For a train before 07:00 on a Saturday or Sunday, breakfast will not be open yet: buy something in the station the evening before.
  • Tram D stops about 100 metres from the hotel and runs past Belvedere to the Ring, which is quicker with luggage than changing to the U1.
  • Drivers can use the hotel garage, for a fee, which makes this a practical place to leave a car before a long rail journey from Hauptbahnhof.
  • Pets are accepted on request, with a possible supplement, so mention the dog when booking rather than at the desk.

Why we love it

  • Wien Hauptbahnhof on the doorstep for Railjets and Nightjets
  • Tram D about 100 metres away, direct to Belvedere and the Ring
  • Breakfast from 06:00 on weekdays for early trains
  • A garage for travellers switching from car to train
Why guests love it

Motel One Wien-Hauptbahnhof works for rail travellers because it removes the last stretch of the journey: the hotel stands beside Vienna's main station, and tram D stops about 100 metres away. Opened in May 2015, it has around 533 air-conditioned rooms, compact rather than spacious, a lounge bar and a paid breakfast buffet that starts at 06:00 from Monday to Friday and at 07:00 at weekends. A garage serves guests who arrive by car, for a fee, and pets are accepted on request. With 5,213 reviews averaging 9.0, guests rate the cleanliness and the location highly, while some mention that the air conditioning struggles in summer. Families with more than one child will find the rooms tight, and travellers after period Vienna should look towards the Ringstraße hotels instead.
