Our take
Behind the York Road facade is the General Lying-In Hospital, a Grade II-listed building that took in mothers from 1828 to 1971; Premier Inn opened its 234 rooms there in March 2013, split between that building and a new block on the site of the nurses' residence. For a rail traveller the point is the street: Waterloo's concourse is about 270 m away, roughly five minutes with a case, with the Bakerloo, Jubilee, Northern and Waterloo & City lines beneath it. I would book it for a late arrival from Southampton or Exeter, since reception never closes. For a dawn train I would not count on breakfast here, as Premier Inn publishes no breakfast hours for this hotel. Drivers should look elsewhere: there is no parking on site.
- Check-in opens at 15:00 (from 11:00 as a paid option) and check-out is at 12:00; staff store bags when the luggage room has space. The station's left-luggage counter opens Monday to Friday, 07:00 to 23:00.
- Do not mix it up with Premier Inn London County Hall on Belvedere Road, a separate hotel a few minutes away: give a taxi driver 85 York Road, SE1 7NJ.
- Leaving the station, follow the signs for taxis and the South Bank (Exit 3, step-free), then walk along York Road towards Westminster Bridge Road.
- Trains from Kent use Waterloo East, a separate station joined to Waterloo by a footbridge: count about ten minutes on foot from its platforms to the hotel.
- Waterloo station closes overnight with nowhere to wait; for a very late arrival, the Jubilee and Northern lines run the Night Tube on Friday and Saturday nights.

Why guests love itWith children, the appeal is distance: the London Eye is about 260 m from the door and Westminster Bridge about 300 m, so a tired seven-year-old can walk back without a bus. Family rooms are on the room list, and the hotel restaurant serves dinner, which saves going back out after the South Bank. Leake Street, the graffiti tunnel under the station, starts on York Road and leads to the food stalls and cafés of Lower Marsh, a quick detour older children tend to enjoy. A double room with a view can be booked as its own category, and guest reviews often mention the London Eye from the upper floors; the hotel does not say which rooms face York Road or announce extra glazing. I would skip it for families who want a pool, connecting suites or a quiet residential street: this is a busy corner by a major station, and rooms are the chain's standard size.
